Their stores are big and bright and somehow more "upscale" than Wal-Mart or Kmart. But behind that chipper-looking exterior lurks a company that can be downright mean-spirited when its customers run into even the slightest problem.

Target's spiteful returns and exchanges policy, in particular, is making it the target of some pretty heated rhetoric from its former customers.

A few of the more recent complaints ...

Michael of New York NY (12/17/08)
I went to Target to develop a role a role a film from a disposable camera. When I returned to pick up my pictures I recieved someone else's photos. So when I returned the wrong pictures to see if they still had my photos I was told that they do not have my photos and they may have given my photos to another customer. All I was given was a 20 gift card and they said that is all that can be done about it.

I have become sad because of the loss of my photos. They contained precious memories of me and my girlfriend returning to her home country after 13 years. I do not think a 20 gift card can replace those memories captured on that film.

The security officer working in the store was folowing me around the store and as I was leaving, he saw me and walked right up behind me and grabbed my butt and acted as if he accidently bumped into me. I feel extremely violated. I want to request to see the video tape. This incident happened on 11/19/08 at approximatly 8:19 right by the entrance. I don't fell comfortable going back into that store with this man working there. I can't believe that this actually happened and I feel so digusted that he did this to me.

I was physically violated by a target employee. I am in shock that this haas happened. I want to seek legal action. I would like to see the video of this!!

I purchased a PSP with an extended warranty, being told that the extended 3 year warranty would replace or repair any damages incorred or that occurred to the PSP. The PSP is in need of what seems like is a pixel repair and the warranty company is telling me that this is not coverd because the PSP tumbled to the floor from my sons lap. Associates at Target and customer service phone reps. have all told me that this should be covered but the warranty Company will not cover it and the company ( Target) is not stepping up to the plate and taking care of it, when it is customary practice for the store to sell these warranties explaining that anything will be coverd.

As I left this store one day this week,I noticed a young man working outside this store gathering baskets from the parking lot. As he pushed these baskets into the store his pants were down below his butt. He continued on in the store with the baskets and was dressed in your store's uniform. I do not know the youg man just thought that you might like to know what represents your store.

Bob of Lagrange, KY September 19, 2008

Bob of Lagrange KY (09/19/08)
On September 14, Louisville, Kentucky was hit with hurricane force winds during the aftermath fo Hurrican Ike. About 80% of the power grid was taken down from fallen trees. My son, A Target employee, was at our house when the power went out. He called his roommates to check on the status of their apartment and found out that the power was down there as well and they were going to their parents homes. At this time his cell phone died. He used my wife's phone to call the New Albany, Indiana store and tell them that he had no way to have a wake-up alarm in the morning - nobody could call him, his phone alarm couldn't be used, his roomates weren't there, and we didn't have a clock that wasn't electric. He couldn't run out and get a wind-up clock because he had barely enough gas to get home and then to work, and none of the stations had power to pump gas. Furthermore, many roads were closed and very few businesses were even open. He arrived at work the next morning about 1/2 hour late and the store manager contacted upper management to have him reprimanded because he didn't go out to find a wind-up alarm clock. Attempts to talk to Target Corporate offices were futile. They either transferred you to another departemnt, put you to a recording asking for your employer ID #, or claimed that they had to have the employees ID number to allow you to register a complaint.
