Their stores are big and bright and somehow more "upscale" than Wal-Mart or Kmart. But behind that chipper-looking exterior lurks a company that can be downright mean-spirited when its customers run into even the slightest problem.
Target's spiteful returns and exchanges policy, in particular, is making it the target of some pretty heated rhetoric from its former customers.
A few of the more recent complaints ...
Nancy of Brooklet GA (03/31/09) I have made my payments to target on time except for last month. My paymenmts have been 10.00 because i miussed one payment they want 54.45 now, thry have charged me a 29.00 late fee, I think this is a rip off. now there calling me every day connstantly, I have told them that I would pay them around the 14th of next month, no, they still call me harrasing me. apparently they have a bad reputation from all the complaints i see. want this stopped. this is harrasing I dont care they will get there money when I have it.

Stephen of New York NY (03/31/09) I understand that after leaving the pharmacy one cannot return a prescription but Target Pharmacy has amended that policy to leaving the counter. My wife picked up my prescription and turned confer with me one aisle away from the counter when when we realized they had charged me full price (50) for a prescription I could get elswhere under my medical plan for 10. The pharmacist insisted we may have tampered with the anti itch lotion and refused to refund our money.
I take it the pharmacy does not trust the store security or cameras watching everything. Any pharmacy requires you be in the store to check your medication Target wants you to stand at the counter so start counting your pills there folks. 50! Kathleen of Falmouth, MI March 26, 2009
Kathleen of Falmouth MI (03/26/09) After emergency surgery in a unfamiliar town I went to the closest pharmacy to my motel that I was staying at while recovering from surgery. I had to have a morphine pain pump removed and of course, needed oral morphine to prevent major withdrawl issues. I dropped off my prescriptions for Kadian and returned at the requested time to get my meds. They had only filled one of the medications, as I have no prescription insurance and they were worried that since that med was over 500.00 we may not have wanted them to fill the other, stronger strength of Kadian due to the cost.
Since I needed this drug to save my life I went ahead and had it filled. The two prescriptions of Kadian (different strengths) were filled at the cost of 1,079 dollars. My complaint is, that if they had enough concern to stop filling my prescrioption then why did they not care enough to tell me that there is a generic form of this drug called MS-Contin that would have cost less than 200.00 dollars. I realize that we would have had to go back to the Dr. to have this scrip re-written, but he was only two blocks from the store and to tell you the truth I would have drove 100 miles to save that much money.
There was one drug that I needed that they did not have and so I stopped at the Harrison Mi Glens Market Pharmacy where I discussed this issue and that is when he told me about MS-Contin, and his actual statement regarding this matter was I guess they just don't care. I'm not a pharmasist and did not know that this alternative drug even existed so I think that they should have at least brought up this option so that I could have took the necessary steps to save at least 800.00. God knows, that in these rough times that is a fortune.
When we called the store they told us that there was no alternative medicine for Kadian, and that since my husband had requested a receipt for the overpriced Levequin that we had purchased prior to this event; to try and get some sort of reimbursement that they assumed we would be getting reimbursed for this prescription as well. Guess what, no one would help with this cost. We called the next day to see if they even had MS-Contin on the shelf and we were informed that yes they did. Every pharmacy that I have ever been too has had the common courtesy to point out alternative drugs for a lot less. I even printed off, and faxed to them the drug description for both drugs that were WORD FOR WORD the same.
They went throug all their excuses, never apologized, and never offered any form of restitution. Not even a simple 10.00 gift card; or a percentage off on my next prescription even though I will never spend another penny at any Target store again. I am outraged, and hurt that no one even tried to put me, as a customer first or even cared enough to tell me about this MS-Contin. I have submitted several complaints by phone and on-line all to no avail. I've brought this to the attention of the Office of The Attorney General (Mike Cox), and am now planning to contact any newpaper in the Saginaw area to warn potential victims of this lack of concern.
I have not been able to pay several of my committed debts due to this major oversight, and have had to draw money from a Line of Credit account with my bank that I dident even know I had to keep from bouncing several checks. I am a disabled Veteran and live on a meager income. My husband, who recently had a titanic valve replacement in his heart suffered severe distress over this and I was very afraid that he would have heart complications over this. So far, so good but we are still worrying about our financial state due to this. If they just would have informed us of our options this could have been a lot less stress for both of us. Please help us if possible. Arla of Swansea, IL March 25, 2009
Arla of Swansea IL (03/25/09) Target charged me a late fee of 39.00 saying they did not receive my 30.00 payment before their due date on the 11th. I called today (3/25) to check on the 30.00 to see if it ever cleared on their end, since it left my account on Feb. 27th. (the amount left was paid off with cash in the store last week, minus the 30) I was told that Target received my money on March 6 and didn't post it until March 17th! I even asked her to repeat the date, spelling it out. S-I-X-T-H of March! So they DID have my money and held it until well past the due date, (the 11th) and then issued me a steep 39.00 late fee! Target got their last penny out of me. Don't trust this company and their thieving ways!
Arla of Belleville, IL March 18, 2009
Arla of Belleville IL (03/18/09) My Target credit card asked for 10.00, due on January 8th. On January 2nd I sent 50.00 through my bank electronically, and Target didn't post it until January 10th, and added a 39.00 late fee. My 50.00 was ate up through the late charge & the 10.00 due. I called and demanded this late fee be taken off since I paid more then enough, and sent it in plenty of time to clear. Target did give me a 39.00 credit that time. February, I made two payments. One by the bank again (25.00) to see how soon they would post that payment and in addition I walked into the store on the 7th and made a payment of 46.05 just encase the bank electronic payment didn't post before the Due Date.
This time, Target posted the bank check on Feb. 7th as well, 6 days after it left my account. Since I was still concerned with Target's slow-poke ways, I sent 30.00 from my bank on February 27th for a 10.00 minimum fee due on March 11th. Plenty of time- I THOUGHT. I just received a phone call (the 16th) saying they did not receive my payment of 30.00 and issued another 39.00 LATE FEE! I immediately called my bank, as the money cleared my account on the 27th of Feb. and they arranged a 3 way call between me, Target and them. They asked Target to remove this late fee, since the bank sent the money out on March 2nd. TARGET REFUSED to take the late fee off, saying they have yet to receive the 30.00 sent.
I expressed to Target I didn't understand why it took them so long to post a payment, when ALL other companies I send checks too receive & post their money within 5 days. I also told them they would lose me as a customer, and I wondered if they held back payments in order to collect a late fee. If Target couldn't treat me fairly, I notified them I would go to the consumer complaint sites and post my circumstances, and their slow-poke ways. The rep. responded, your interest rate will go up. I told them I would pay the card off, and never step foot in a TARGET store again. I expressed my displeasure over being treated so poorly when I always sent in more then required, with plenty of time for them to process it.
My husband just walked into the store (30 mins ago) and paid CASH to my account, with the difference of 30.00. (the check sent earlier) To my surprise, the automatic system said they will POST my 30.00 on March 21st! Does this mean they have my check now and are holding it back on purpose? I am LIVID! TARGET GOT THEIR LAST PENNY OUT OF ME. I'm not asking for special treatment. I'm asking to be treated FAIRLY. BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY'S CREDIT TACTICS
