Their stores are big and bright and somehow more "upscale" than Wal-Mart or Kmart. But behind that chipper-looking exterior lurks a company that can be downright mean-spirited when its customers run into even the slightest problem.

Target's spiteful returns and exchanges policy, in particular, is making it the target of some pretty heated rhetoric from its former customers.

A few of the more recent complaints ...

Lindsey of Farmingdale ME (01/19/09)
I went to Target in augusta, maine to buy a wii, my check for 342.19 was declined for no apparent reason. I was very embarassed by this and left the store. I then went to Best Buy to make my purchase and they had no problem accepting my check.

Today I called certegy to find out why and they told me that there was suspicious activity at [this] Target store, and I fell into that category. I feel I was discriminated against because of my age, as I am 18 years old. As a result I am very upset, I have a full time job and pay all my bills. I am unlikely to ever shop at Target again.

[Target] lost out on a 342.19 sale on a very snowy sunday! I am sure you could have used the sale.

My drugs insurance, acceptable by other area pharmacies, was not accepted by target pharmacy. I just paid: 103.99 for a generic brand. As a new customer I am truly disappointed. The staff however, was polite.

Megan of Orange, CA January 19, 2009

Megan of Orange CA (01/19/09)
I printed out my yearly credit report and saw that I still had a balance on my Target Visa for the amount of 11.79 and that it wasnt paid for an entire year. I paid my card off last year and filed away so I wouldnt use it anymore. I never received any mail, an email or a call from Target regarding a remaining balance of 11.79. They also never informed me they were reporting me to the credit bureau. I called Target and they had no explaination of what happened. I was told by G. Robinson

(In house recovery Dept at Target) that they never sent me anything and to go to Target right away and pay the balance so she can send to the credit bureau and get it fixed. She told me to call her in 48hrs for status. I called when she said and no one would transfer me to her. Target told me there was nothing they could do for me. They said I cant prove that they didnt send me anything and to write the credit bureau. I can prove that I paid it off and still havent got an expaination why I had a balance still.

I have been a long time customer and have paid my bills ontime since 2002. Why wouldnt I pay 11.79 for an entire year! I think there is some funny business going on there as I was told two different things regarding my account but I have no way to prove it.

In result of their poor services, I have a lower that perfect score on my credit report and am in the process of getting a loan for a house.

i work for the target in pico rivera as a consumables associate and i was shocked when i saw how much expired product i found in the store i found yogurt, meat , cereal bars, milk and juice just among a few things at the most 6 months old(expired) it was disgusting... and mind you they have only been a a fully operating market for around 3 months now do the math on that... i have brought it up to the managers many a times but it doesnt seem to bother them. so i strongly advise you do not even take a glance at the market section in target.
