Mostafa of Arlington TX writes (9/24/01):
I get this postcard inviting me to apply by phone for a credit card of $4000. After that I pickup the phone and I did call the customer service who were a very nice and friendly girl voice asking me to give her all my information, Social Security, etc., and switching me to her supervisor who told me first of all that my call is recorded.

Then after that she told me that you gonna have to choose between Visa or Mastercard. Then she asked me to make a deposit of $199 immediately by phone because this offer is for limited time. I gave her my account number with the routing number, then she told me that we gonna send you a package with a free tiket to Orlando Florida, hotel room for three days and I have to wait for 3 weeks to receive this package.

I got this package but I was expecting first to have that MasterCard, and guess what I found? Some kind like Wal-Mart card (Diamond Card) with a catalog inviting me to buy their goods with high prices!

I read enclosed in the fine print claim that if I am not satisfied i got to return the package within one month and that's what I did and I was waiting for the refund for weeks and as I didn't receive nothing I called the customer service who told me that I am not allowed to return that package.

I am a simple worker wih a small wage and $200 is my wage for almost a week. I don't like to be stolen!

Jesus of Mission TX (10/17/01):
I received a post card saying that I was approved for a credit limit of $4000.00 from National Credit Shopper. I have being waiting for over two weeks, for the card. So I decided to check this company on the Internet, and see what I could find, and what I now know is that it was a scam of $199.95!

I make $200.00 a week, and I live on a tight budget, so this is real hard for me on my bills, with a big set back.

Curtis of Maricopa AZ (9/26/01):
I received a notification in the mail from NCS stating that I had an approved credit line for $4,000 and that I had to call for activation. When I contacted them, the person informed me that yes, I did have an approved line of credit and it would take a $195.00 service charge to activate. I was informed that I would have to make minimum purchases of $99.00 on the card. I agreed and was sent my card.

When it arrived a cataloge came with it, along with instructions. I had to purchase items from the cataloge only. I looked at some items in the cataloge and found an item that I could buy for $25.00 being sold for $99.00. After making a $99.00 purchase and paying three on-time payments I would be sent a real card.

I called the number to cancel and return the items in the package for a refund. I was told that they would review my complaint and get back to me. I feel that I was mislead by the company. Even if I do not get a refund, I feel that others should be warned. Their cancellation policy states that you must call within 30 days and give a good reason for wanting to cancel and get a refund. Even though I explained to them that I felt I was mislead, they still refused to issue a refund.

NCS also sent me a "free" 30 day trial from Nation Safe for property identification. They did not explain the charge of $99.00 per year for the service. When NCS was contacted about this extra charge, I was informed that the 30-day trial started from the day of the initial phone call.

Lou Ann of New Hyde Park, NY (8/14/01):
In mid July, 2001, I received a postcard in the mail stating I was entitled to a Visa card with a $4,000 credit limit. I was told to call the 800 number on the card. When I did, the operator told me I would need to give my checking account number and other information so that the fee of $199.95 would be deducted from my account to purchase the credit card.

Two weeks later, I received the packet with an NCS credit card, not a Visa card. I called the 800 number and explained this was not what I wanted. I wanted a full refund. The operator stated they would review my taped conversation, and let me know if I was entitled to a refund. I received a call two days later saying "no refund". I've spoken with several representatives of this company, and I'm getting nowhere. I was just notified from my bank that another deduction of $39.00 was just taken from my account. Again I called NCS to tell them to stop taking money from my account.

I feel violated. I'm not the sort of person who falls into these sort of traps easily. I'm worried that they can pull money from my checking account at any time. I spoke with my bank representative who advised me to close my account once all my checks clear. Until then, I have to worry that they may "dip" into my account again.

I am a legal secretary, don't make much money, with three small children. I use this checking account to deposit my check, wait for it to clear so I can buy food for my family. I can't have this company have this type of control over my bank account. I was stupid to fall into this trap, but now I want help to get out of this. All I want is my $199.95 + $39.00 back. I want them to stop taking money out of my checking account. I don't understand how they can do this without my signature anywhere on a piece of paper. I feel mislead and want this stopped before someone else falls into this trap.

Thomas of Lake Ronkonkoma, NY (5/14/01):
Recently I ordered a Diamond Select Credit Card for $199.00 from National Credit Shopper. After reading the material sent, I realized the product was misrepresented during the initial phone call. I was not told a deposit of 35% of the total merchandise purchased plus 15% of the total order for shipping and handling is required to place an order.

I was told if I purchased an item for $99.00 from the catalogue and paid three monthly payments of $33.00, this would establish a good credit history. However, with National Credit Shopper's down payment policy the initial purchase would have to be over $150.00. When I asked the sales representative if I could return the package if the catalogue did not interest me, I was assured that I could within thirty days.

When I contacted their customer service department, the representative refused to review the initial phone conversation or issue a "return authorization number" needed to return the package. Since National Credit Shopper claims to record all phone conversations. A review of the initial phone conversation during the first week of April 2001 will bring a speedy resolution to this matter. I would like to return the package and have my $199.00 refunded to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
