‘Killer Cribs’ Study Finds Toxins in Common Baby Products
Graco Fined $4 Million

Emily of Hamilton OH writes (8/4/01):
I have a Graco stationary player, some may call it an exersaucer, I am not sure of the specific name of the model that I have. It has a rotating seat with a couple toys around the edge and the bottom of the exersaucer is flat.

Anyway, every morning I put my son Alex, 7 months old, in the exersaucer while I take a shower. I have a see-through shower curtain so I can see him at all times and I place him right outside the shower. On the morning of Aug 3, 2001 I was doing my normal routine, placed Alex in the exersaucer and got in the shower. Alex was playing and I was peeking out at him every now and then, but always watching him.

I got out of the shower and was drying off and Alex was playing with his keys, he dropped them and looked over the edge of the exersaucer, and at this time the entire thing fell forward with him in it. I seriously thought my son had broken his neck with the way he landed. I picked him up, he was screaming, I was shaking. The left side of his face around his eyes began to swell and turn red.

At first I thought I was the one to blame because I was busy drying off and doing my after-shower things, and was not fast enough so that I could catch him when he fell over, but I'm not. When I saw him topple over it fell like I was moving in slow motion. And why should I be prepared to catch my son when I put him in something that I thought was safe and reliable? On this toy there is no age, height or weight restriction. My son is not crawling or walking yet so of course I thought that it was still okay to use this product, that he had not outgrown it yet.

Other then being terribly shaken up and angry and Alex having a small bruise on his left side of his forehead above his eye, there were no other serious injuries. He was fine an hour later but just to see this happen was enough for me and it scared Alex. My concern is the other parents who place thier children in this product and attend to other things while thier baby play may be in great danger, even if they are two feet away, like I was.

We found three "stationary entertainers" on the Graco Web site that match Emily's general description. They all contain recommendations similar to this: "For use only by a child who is able to sit upright unassisted, who is unable to walk, weighs less than 30 lbs. and is less than 32 inches tall. " They all have height adjustments that let them "grow" with the infant. We encouraged Emily to file a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which investigates infant product safety.
