Sharon of Louisville KY writes (8/14/02):
My family & I took a cruise aboard Carnival's "Destiny" from 06-30-02 to 07-07-02. My son had brand new expensive electronic equipment with him. On the last night of the cruise, you are asked to leave your luggage outside of your cabin door, for the cabin stewards to pick up and sort out by the colored tags, which they give to you. Then they supposably deposit the luggage to the luggage depot for the departing guests to pick up the next morning.

We were a party of six. The next morning, five of us found our luggage in the colored section they were supposed to be in, but my son's, that had the expensive electronics, luggage was missing. Four of us searched through every piece of luggage there, in every color section. His luggage was not to be found. He completed a lost luggage form.

A few days after our return home, Carnival contacted him to say they had found his luggage, and would ship it to him in 8 to 10 business days, (it took us 5 hours to fly home). It took 10 business days to receive his luggage. There was also a $30 C.O.D. charge with it. The lock that he originally had on his luggage was gone, and all of his electronic equipment was missing.

We had also purchased a trip cancellation insurance, which I read after we were home, and realized it would cover up to $1500 of lost luggage, although he was missing over $2000 of merchandise. I requested a claim form, when it was mailed to me, it was THEN stated that the claim would have to be turned it to Homeowners Insurance first.

Jerry of Mishawaka IN (4/19/02):
My wife and I just completed a 4-night cruise on the Fantasy (Freeport and Nassau). On the last day of sailing we were out to sea and we spent the entire day on deck. Our money was put in the safe on Tuesday around 8:00 p.m. when we returned from Paradise Island. There was $1500.00 in a plastic bag that was counted and put in the safe and locked. We never checked the safe again until 5:00 Wednesday, April 10th.

When we came back to the cabin we found that our money had been taken out of the safe. We notified the front desk and 3 security people came and interviewed us and completely checked our room but did not find our money. They said that they would do an investigation and get back with us after they had conducted their investigation. We left the ship on Thursday morning and no one contacted us concerning this matter.

Someone on board the ship entered our room and got into our safe. The key was in the room -- in a purse hanging up in closet next to a camera bag and a back pack. I know that it is possible for someone to enter the rooms because we noticed that night after the incident that the doors of the rooms are opened during cleaning and not always did I see a Fantasy worker in the room. Some areas had 5 or 6 rooms opened at the same time. I don’t know who took our money but feel that you are responsible for our things when they are in your care and in your safe!

We were going to continue on to Daytona Beach for another 5 nights at the "Sand Castle Hotel", but had to call them on the drive home because we did not have any money. I took $200 out of your ATM just to get us home! Besides not being able to continue our vacation we lost the $77.70 deposit on our room there!

We have always been very, very happy with Carnival Cruises, in fact I am now an internet travel agent and push Carnival Cruises. I have numerous people booked for future cruises who know that I just went on this cruise. I am sure they don’t want to hear what I have to tell them. This is the 4th cruise we have taken and two other cruises we have taken, we booked over forty people that went with us.

When we called your security department they made us feel like we were the criminals. No consideration was given to us. We had just lost $1500.00 cash. We were devastated. Our 35th wedding anniversary just turned into a nightmare. We were celebrating this anniversary on your ship. No one gave us any consideration to get back with us concerning your investigation.

It's very unsafe and, yes, unwise to travel with large sums of money. This is why traveler's checks were invented.

Dan of Martinez GA (12/9/03):
A Carnival crew member researched my telephone number from an email that I had sent my girlfriend. I did not know she was still involved with him, but obviously she is. He telephoned me and threated me and my family with extreme violence and prejudice. This makes me very nervous to go on any of their cruise ships. He stated he was once involved with the Italian mafia and that if I didn't leave her and let him have her, he would come and destroy me and my family the next time he was off the ship. This person is a danger to anyone who doesn't give him what he wants and I will never go aboard another one of their ships do to this fact. I refuse to put me or my family in jeopardy, because of someone else's obsession.
