I want to begin by stating that Peoples Gas is a monopoly which goes against the anti-trust laws. So obviously they have bought the Illinois government. I co-own a 2 flat in Chicago and have dealt with them since 1998. Every year I choose the budget billing option where the payments are split over the year and the same amount paid monthly. If I used more gas used that year, I would pay off the amount due by the end of the year. This year I received a notice in July that my budget billing was cancelled and I owed the full amount of $1500.00. I had been paying $300 per month up until then. There was no reason given. So I can assume that because of the max exodus from Chicago they are in desperate need of cash. So I set up a monthly payment plan online where I would pay $398.00 per month until the balance was paid. I was informed that I only paid $350.00 so they canceled this without telling me. I paid $500 on the August bill and owed $855.24.

Today I received a shut off threat letter stating that if I did not pay it in full by September 25th they would cancel my service. So I paid it in full and decided to share my experience with them on this site. I am looking in to see if there can be a class action suit filed against them or if there is currently one on the books. They need to be held accountable for their disgusting practices and the fact that they are a monopoly. With all of the focus now on Chicago I am going to the Federal government regarding the anti-trust statute to see of they are able to intervene.

I was enrolled in budget billing and my bill was consistently $67 every month. I missed one gas payment and my bill was $135 and I paid for 2 months. I understood those charges. However, I cancelled service and made sure everything was paid off. Out of nowhere I have a $147.00 charge after closing my account because I had moved out of that apartment. I call to speak about the charges, they tell me that these are charges are from 12/24 and 1/25. I felt like this was scammy and I asked the representative if this was because I closed my account and if it was like an exit fee and he said yes. $147 as an exit fee is outrageous.

This service would have been scheduled with Frank **; he is my fiancé. I was home to let Peoples Gas in. On 5/2/25 Peoples Gas was scheduled to perform inside safety inspection and installed/performed maintenance on the SureRead automated meter reader. Done well, all is good. Andy (**) from Peoples Gas has been to our residence before, and once again he provided the best customer service and pride in his job. Very professional, friendly young man. Good employees are hard to find and harder to keep. You have a great employee here.

When setting up the account I had thought I had setup automatic payments, but I was wrong. I have been back and forth between homes so I missed the billing. With no physical notice notice my gas was shut off. They shoved a notice in my door stating that it was shut off (maybe do this before you shut it off?). I called, but the office was closed, so I paid my bill in full immediately using their automated service. Called the next day... but it takes them two full days to turn your service back on after bill is paid in full, and even longer if you do not call to follow up. Does not mater if this is your source of heat, hot water, anything. They do not care.

(Service Date: 3/28/25). After having two previous technicians come out with no resolution, we were starting to feel frustrated. But then Laurie showed up and truly saved the day! She was amazing—kind, professional, and jumped right into the job without hesitation. Laurie got things done quickly and efficiently, and her positive attitude made all the difference. Thank you so much, Laurie! You were our lifesaver that day and we’re beyond grateful for your help. Peoples Gas is lucky to have someone like you on their team!

The worst experience ever. I activated my services 1 month prior to moving and then they shut off my gas because it was connected to the wrong unit. No notice, No Call, no email. Then to make it worse I have a child that’s disabled that’s unable to eat warm food or take a shower because of no gas. Then they tell me I have to wait 4 days to get service. So my child must sit in her dirty pants and eat process food. While you guys find time. Smh.

I have never in my 42 years on this planet experienced a more incompetent utility company. It has been weeks of mistake after mistake. I thought Nicor was bad, but Peoples Gas make them look like white glove service. First, they don't let you book your appointment more than a week before your requested date. So you can't book other move-related stuff until a week out because you don't know when you'll need to be available to let the technician in. Not exactly ideal. Other utilities allowed me to book several weeks out without issue.

So a week before my move, I book my appointment online, and this is all the crap that happened afterwards: 1) They booked it for the wrong date, and the correct date was already full by the time they corrected it, so I had to move my schedule around to accommodate this. 2) They put down the wrong address - not even in the correct state! 3) Dispatch gave the technician the wrong phone number, so when she arrived for the appointment, she couldn't reach me by phone... and for some reason, she kept trying to enter through the locked gate in the back instead of using the buzzer in the front. (Luckily, I went for a walk and found her van parked down the block.) 4) However, apparently the notes I saw her make on her computer never made their way into their system, and a week later I began receiving phone calls from their customer service trying to "reschedule" an appointment that had already occurred.

      5) I explained this to them 3 times but those notes also did not make it into their system, and I continued getting phone calls. 6) I kept telling them that they just needed to call their technician and she would confirm that she had already been out. Apparently they are not able to "speak directly" to their technicians, and can't figure out how to speak to them indirectly. I finally got frustrated and asked to speak to a supervisor, who simply clicked a button to close the task. Apparently that's all they needed to do and I'd been harassed for a week for no reason. Just every step of this has been nothing but incompetence, errors, and poor customer service.

I've been trying to contact Revenue Assurance to set up service at a new property I recently purchased. It's been near impossible to get a hold of anyone in Revenue Assurance. I don't even know why I need to contact them. In the meantime, the house can't be lived in because I can't get any heat and it's 10 degrees F outside. I'm currently on hold. It's been 1 hour and 40 minutes and still hearing the same hold music.

I live in a 52 unit building in which Peoples Gas Shut off the connection for the hot water line in my building in Chicago on Paxton...The water has been old for a total of 26 hours now and we have a building of mixed ages. Mostly elderly. I think it is sad, shows of lack of care that the new property owners have been trying to get a technician out since yesterday 9/28/2023 only for them to tell us the tenants that they can't get someone out until 10/3/2023!!! Really??? So those of us who work we're supposed to be okay with not being able to shower or take a bath and supposed to be ok with bathing in ice cold water??? I will be reporting this to the Governor's office. Shame they think it's okay for people not to have hot water for 4 days.

On the evening of 9/23/22, I discovered that my hot water was not working due to locks being put on my gas meter however I was unable to reach customer service until the morning of 9/26/22 due to People's gas closing at 4 pm on 9/23/22 and being closed 9/24/22. The first representative I spoke with informed me that in order to remove locks from my meter, I would have to contact a private contractor and then informed me this information was provided from his manager and also their emergency team representative.

Once I disconnected from the first representative, I immediately called again and choose the option of speaking with a emergency line representative who directed me back to customer service. Once connected to the second representative, she informed me that my account was active and current and that meter was locked in error and was able to schedule for someone to come out in the next couple of hours to remove locks however she had to get me back to the emergency line to speak with a representative to set up appointment. I inquired if I could be compensated for the inconvenience of not having hot water over the weekend and the given representative informed me that this could not be done and that her getting me a same-day appointment for compensation.

Once the worker arrived to remove locks, he informed my husband that he was unable to remove the locks due to not paying bill however once he further researched, he informed my husband that we should have had two accounts with People's Gas. One for the first floor and the basement and that the basement was being paid up until June of this year and due to not having a name associate with the apartment basement. We informed him that we just purchased this building February of this year and was not informed by the seller that we would need two People's Gas accounts and that when the tech came to set up our cooking gas she did not inform us that we would need to set up another account, only cooking gas.

The response from the tech and customer service was that letter was sent to previous owner and when no name is on account and bill not being paid, they have to shut services off. We were able to add another account however this was not completed in time for given tech to complete due to him not being able to wait due to other appointment he had scheduled. Once new account was added, we were then informed another tech could not come back until 9/30/22 and no earlier appointment could be made even after speaking to a team lead with People's Gas. We had no choice but to accept the available appointment with compensation given to inconvenience.
